After turning down their option on the first four United Kingdom Beatles
singles (Parlophone 4949 "Love Me Do" / "P. S. I Love You", 4983 "Please
Please Me" / "Ask Me Why", 5015 "From Me To You" / "Thank You Girl" and
5055 "She Loves You" / "I'll Get You"), Capitol could no longer ignore EMI's
(their parent company) new pop band from Liverpool, England. They opted to
release the group's fifth United Kingdom single in the U.S.
Capitol took the A-side from Parlophone single R-5084,
I Want To Hold Your
Hand
b/w This Boy and replaced the B-side with the song I Saw Her Standing
There
.
Was this a possible pre-emptive strike in the soon-to-be upcoming legal battle
with Vee Jay Records, as this song once had been the property of Vee Jay who
had released it on their
Introducing The Beatles album (VJLP/SR 1062)?
Capitol also agreed to an unheard-of $50,000 promotional campaign on an
unknown talent to familiarize America with the Beatles' name.
It was this single that ushered Beatlemania into the United States and that
the general public will identify as the Beatles' first American record.
