Capitol Records album jacket cardboard envelopes are manufactured in two
variations: ones with interior flaps at the top and bottom and ones that do not
possess these flaps. The cardboard is a grey variety. Occasionally white and pink
cardboard envelopes are found. (Image A)
Two paper slicks are applied to this envelope. The slick applied to what would become the back of the album jacket is placed first. It is larger than the cardboard
envelope. The portions that extended past the cardboard on the top, bottom and spine
are folded over to the front. The second slick, smaller than the cardboard envelope,
is applied to the front of the jacket. (Image B)
With the exception of HELP!, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical
Mystery Tour, all Capitol album jackets feature the round RIAA logo on the back of
the jacket, usually in the bottom right hand corner.
Most jackets also possess a number in the vicinity of the RIAA logo. This number
indicates the factory of manufacture. Though there are exceptions, the chart below
shows the numbers generally assigned to true first issues.
